How to build a believable caravan economy

A caravan setting becomes convincing when trade is more than a buy-low, sell-high button. Start with the route map if your main problem is geography: deciding where goods come from, which oasis towns matter, how far guards must travel, and where mountains, deserts, or borders create risk. It is useful for tabletop campaigns, classroom activities, strategy notes, and game-room wall art. The map provides a shared regional picture before players or readers deal with individual merchants.

Choose The Desert Merchant’s Almanac when you need systems rather than scenery. It explains practical questions such as cargo value, scarcity, guard costs, route knowledge, weather, tolls, and the consequences of losing time. Because the guide is system-agnostic, you can adapt its ideas to a medieval sandbox game, a home tabletop ruleset, or an original strategy design. It does not claim to unlock advantages in Silkroad Online, Bannerlord, or any other commercial game.

The scenario pack is best for storytellers who already understand the basic economy but need events. Its disputes, ambushes, negotiations, guild rivalries, and changing market conditions turn trade into a campaign rather than bookkeeping. Combine it with the almanac when you want both rules and narrative pressure. A caravan master may choose a safer road with lower profit, bargain for protection, respond to a closed border, or discover that a supposedly valuable cargo has flooded the next market.
